Apple Silicon MacBooks – will they get 5G cellular ?

As Apple moves to Apple Silicon Macs, it may finally be time for the MacBooks to get 5G cellular on an e-sim to allow people to connect to the internet without needing WiFi.

As Apple have already bought Intel’s cellular division out last year, it is time that people get connected even if they don’t have internet at home, like my mother in law’s house in the Waikato.

It would also help those who commute on public transport, or those who would use their MacBook outdoors on a fine day, or in a café.

Of course, this would be excellent with the Apple Silicon Mac compatibility with iPad and iPhone apps working with the fixed keyboard and trackpad.

With an e-sim, it would not require a physical SIM card slot, and would be easy to change cellular networks.

As we have seen already on iPad, cellular adds just a couple of hundred dollars, which we expect to be less than what Apple will save on the cost of the new Apple Silicon processors compared to Intel; this may permit all new Apple Silicon MacBooks to include 5G cellular as a standard feature and still be cheaper than comparable Intel MacBook models.

What3words

A London startup called What3words has solved one of the biggest issues with location, that of memorability and meaningful locations.

To do this, they found that the world could be divided into 3 metre by 3 metre squares and then referred to by 3 simple words (out of a list of 40 thousand), this has been useful compared to trying to precisely work out co-ordinates when you are in rural areas.

Already the What3words app has saved dozens of lost rural walkers in the UK, and helped with precise mail deliveries in Africa, as well as ensuring that people can find precisely where to go when reception is spotty or battery life is short.

For example, our wellington meeting room is located at brains.slowly.vibes and our kapiti meeting room is located at relatives.binds.reminders

It is as simple as loading that address into the What3words app, and it will bring it up on the map, and it is far easier than numerical co-ordinates.

I highly recommend that you check out the what3words.com website or the mobile app, and you may find it interesting to check your address for interesting what3words addresses.
